So, this interview from Fox Business’ Varney and Co. with Puerto Rico Secretary of Commerce José Pérez-Riera is quite telling. The level of ignorance from the American media is sad. Let’s get this straight: you can disagree with Pérez-Riera, but the interviewers should at least respect the guy. When will Puerto Ricans wake up and demand that the US media be more respectful to Puerto Ricans? This has gone beyond politics, this should now be about Puerto Ricans banding together and saying that they will no longer be treated like the little colony that the US media has portrayed them to be.
Now, people laughed at me when I wrote the following piece last year called Why Puerto Rico Will Never Become the 51st State. My main argument is that there are many Americans (especially those in the conservative media) who have no clue about Puerto Rico and actually don’t want Puerto Rico to become a state.
Americans will never accept a flag with 51 stars in it
Well, this latest clip from Fox News Business just confirms my original thesis. Wake up, Puerto Rico, the United States media does not care about the status question. And Pérez-Riera is a pro-statehooder whose leader is a Republican governor. It is bizarre, but it does not surprise me any more.
By the way, the news has been spreading around the island.
So, there is a debt compromise and most of the country is pissed. Hey, democracy isn’t pretty and we do commend the US Congress for actually completing a deal, since we do think about 80% of the United States is pretty middle of the road and logical.
Which brings us to the illogical. FOX NEWS.
Looks like this week’s FOX MESSAGE OF THE WEEK is that the United States cannot be Greece, which is having some economic problems of its own as well as social chaos.
First the video evidence:
This message has been going on at Fox for the last three weeks. And now we will tell FOX a couple of things. First of all, the UNITED STATES WILL NEVER BE GREECE. Leave your fear-mongering and irresponsible reporting alone. Start being freakin responsible.
Case in point:
The Wall Street Journal, which last time we checked is owned by FOX NEWS CORP, basically said that comparing the US to Greece is ridiculous.
Greece is a REALLY SMALL COUNTRY with just about 11 million people. The US has over 350 million. Not even close. In the grand scheme of things, Greece is a bit bigger than New York City.
Umm, the Greek GDP is in negative numbers. The US is not.
So FOX NEWS, come on, freaking report the news, and just quit being so damn irresponsible. As if you care.
Or maybe it was because, according to the Associated Press, 400 advertisers refused to have their ads run during The Glenn Beck Show.
Nonetheless, it’s official, Glenn Beck, America’s favorite conspiracy-theory-Latino-hating-extremist-Tea Party-looney (or as we say in Spanish, EL GRAN PENDEJO), will no longer have his show on Fox The AP reported this afternoon the following:
Fox News Channel on Wednesday said it was dropping Glenn Beck’s afternoon talk show, which has sunk in the ratings and suffered financially due to an advertiser boycott.
Fox and Beck said the show will end later this year.
We applaud Fox for making this decision and yes, we are not idealistic enough to think that it cancelled Beck because of his craziness. This was purely about MONEY, DINERO, CLAMS, MOOLAH.
But who cares? This is very major news, and one that has been long coming. As the article reports:
Beck’s 5 p.m. ET show averaged 2.7 million viewers during the first three months of 2010, and was at just under 2 million for the same period this year, the Nielsen Co. said. His decline was sharper among younger viewers sought by advertisers.
Increasingly, the show began to be dominated by Beck standing in front of a chalk board giving his theories about the world’s troubles.
However, Beck has built a powerful brand for himself with a radio show and digital properties. A key Fox executive, Joel Cheatwood, is joining Mercury Radio Arts later this month.
“I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News,” Beck said in a statement. “I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I’ve learned and will continue to learn from him and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership.”
One of Beck’s most prominent critics — David Brock, founder of the liberal watchdog Media Matters for America — said that “the only surprise is that it took Fox News months to reach this decision.”
What’s next for America’s Favorite Latino Hater? We are sure he is savvy enough to show up somewhere with his chalkboards and theories of a “lost America.” Let the speculation run rampant, we don’t care today. Today, we sing!
