We were going to let you guys off the hook, but when you blocked the actual video segment when the hosts of TOP GEAR make lame and racist jokes about Mexicans on YouTube, we said “no más.”
Luckily, we have a file of the video right here:
Yes, we know what you will say. That we are just overreacting and that it was in good fun and humor. First of all, comments such as the following from host Richard Hammond are just ignorant and not funny at all:
Why would you want a Mexican car? Because cars reflect national characteristics don’t they. Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat.
That is such an insightful and wonderful image, bringing us back to the days of Speedy Gonzales and other images that Mexicans and Latinos have been fighting to remove. If you were going to be funny about Mexican sports cars, be funny, be creative, be clever. But no, you went the easy route and we are calling you for it.
And host Jeremy Clarkson added this fun piece:
‘We won’t get any complaints about this because at the Mexican embassy the ambassador’s going to be sitting there with a remote control like this,’ Clarkson said, slumping in the chair, snoring.
So we are asking that you apologize for the comments. Have fun with the apology. Do some actual research about modern Mexican culture and maybe even acknowledge that Mexico is actually a very diverse and dynamic country with a rich history. Sure, it has its problems, but doesn’t every country have issues?
Here’s a thought: make a video apology, post it on YouTube and let people share it.
But guess what, blocking what was already broadcast won’t gain you many fans. Don’t ignore social media. Embrace it. Apologize now. Have fun with it. You will thank yourselves later. Trust us.
