The things you to try and get re-elected. In the case of Puerto Rico’s Republicans pro-statehood governor Luis Fortuño, you spend 30 minutes talking with a puppet. La Comay from WAPA TV’s Superexclusivo is the island’s #1 show. The host is a puppet and Fortuño got a full half-hour. We will be dissecting this later this week since just like any politician, Fortuño misses the mark on many things, but here is the full interview (in Spanish) for you so see. Yes, just in case you didn’t know, Fortuño is talking policy with a puppet.
With Luisito being a puppet for U.S. interests, the interview makes 100% sense.
Fortuño has not been the only Gorvenor to talk to La Comay. Exgovernor Anibal Acevedo Vila did it as well.
We know. This has nothing to do with what governors have spoken to a puppet, the fact is that they HAVE to is a sad statement about popular culture in PRico. We can do better.
I believe your premise in this matter is confusing. Even though the primary character is a fictitious one it is created much like any character on entertainment. Everyday politicians talk to colloquial characters as to bond with “the people”, being this the audience of such a show. In the case of SuperXclusivo the programming has taken a more human perspective considering the growing violence in our Island and the lack of true answers from the government. The puppet is “free” to judge and question because, in the purpose of its own creation, it is not real hence the opinion, ludicrous as it may ( thats why it uses the Allegedly and apparently alibi) can be published without consequence. The fact that this puppet, which is nothing more than a mask for the opinion of its puppeteer Antulio Santarrosa, has been local TV’s most watched prime time show gives it power to summon these high profile figures and question them parallel to the questioning of public opinion in the mainstream media.
It may not be the best but it is useful.
If it were so transparent, then just have the host ask the questions without the puppet. That would take real journalistic courage and hiding behind a puppet is a sad statement about popular culture in Puerto Rico these days. We can do better. It is beneath the office of the governor to appear on a puppet show. Sorry, we think differently.
“La Comay from WAPA TV’s Superexclusivo is the island’s #1 show.”
It seems the Governor knows exactly what to do to reach a large audience to get his message out to the voters. Seems like a political savvy thing to do. President Obama frequently goes on comedian based shows that are popular to get his message out and to have a few good laughs at himself. Now how can anyone not like a politician who can laugh at themselves?! It certainly makes them more like-able.
Bruce, comparing the Jimmy Fallon Show to La Comay doesn’t make sense. We don’t see POTUS being interviewed for a half hour by a puppet. Sure, he is savvy but an appearance like this doesn’t do dignity to the office and when POTUS slow-jammed the news we thought that was dumb too. This had to do with the dumbing down of culture and politics. La Comay is awful TV but the island eats it up.
A comedian is a comedian is a comedian Julito. It doesn’t matter whether they are in disguise or not. The whole purpose is to keep the conversation on a lighter side while still allowing the message to get out. Maybe you are just to focused on how you think people are judging Puerto Rico?
Nope, I am just focused on the fact that a puppet is the best representation of popular culture in PR right now. I would have more respect for this comedian actor if he had the cojones to not hide behind a puppet mask. We can do better, and guilty as charged if I am accused of trying to raise the bar on how others think of Puerto Rico these days. If that is my sin, I will keep sinning. 🙂
I’m guessing the need to “raise the bar” on how others think about Puerto Rico comes from insecurity and low self-esteem Julito. But that’s just my opinion…
Ha! What an illogical conclusion. Nope, no insecurity here. That made me chuckle.
Just messing with you Julito. Thought it would give you a few chuckles. I was in your neck of the woods recently for a month. I had a great time visiting with the family.
Who does? My opinion is that only those who live outside of PR do want better for our island. Because we live or have lived in other countries and see how other cultures really developed to mature societies were crimes do get solved, punishment is awarded and people treat each other with respect. Some may say that I am too old, but I remember when in PR that was the norm, rather than the exception as it is today. Everyone has a right to an opinion and to voice that opinion. However, in PR the best course of action is to shut-up, or accept the fact that someone is not going to like your opinion and shut you up. And even if you do not voice your opinion, just go for a walk or to the store to buy groceries you are more likely to get shot (with real bullets) than if you are in Afghanistan or Iraq. That is very sad!
That is very sad and we think La Comay is just a reflection of this very true statement of Puerto Rican society.
Seems Angel Pla has made Mitt Romney’s case that culture determines whether or not a country will prosper or not. And since most everyone seems to agree that the US’s culture is conducive to prosperity, then why try to change it with a culture that it is not working for, say, Mexico? You can’t argue that Puerto Rico is a social country like Mexico and the people have become very docile and dependent on the government. It is proven that most social countries end in failure because they cannot support the excessive entitlement programs such as in Spain and Greece which are going through their economic downturn due to indebtedness. And of course we are seeing the same thing happening in the US. The US is at a turning point. We either will go extreme socialism or extreme capitalism because most governments and it’s people cannot find the right mix to make it work. Either extreme socialism or extreme capitalism is bad for the people.
Unfortunately this puppet has a lot of power do to her following. Politicians are plain scared of her opinion. She really is a bully and very close to a blackmail artist as you can get . The politicians cater to her requests because the alternative would be their political demise. Dagerous in a way. To her credit she is more efficient solving crimes than the police department and the justice department. She has proven this. I personally think that it is embarasing to see a well educated man talking to a vulgar, low class puppet or puppet handler like Cobo Santa Rosa. I would never ever go that low.
