We will not be subtle about this: the self-proclaimed “movement” called the Tequila Party (which btw according to its organizers has only 2,000 members worldwide) is a farce, an insult and mockery to all Latino voters in the United States.

Our poll, which clearly shows that the vast majority of our readers think the name Tequila Party is just plain misguided and dumb, continues to get votes. The verdict is clear: over 80% of our readers think the name just does not work.

Now there are rumblings that Tequila Party spokesperson DeeDee García Blasé, who is making the rounds on mainstream media promotion an organization that quite frankly has no members (our Facebook page has more members that the TP), is just a puppet figure of a bigger (and strange) plan by the Republican Party to pander to Latino voters for the 2012 elections. In the next few weeks, we plan to expose this connect and quite simply, follow the money.


In the meantime, a new Facebook page called Stop the Tequila Party has been formed tonight by Facebook users and their mission is crystal clear. As their page’s mission states:

It is clear that the recent media lovefest with DeeDee García Blasé and the Tequila Party (which claims to have 2,000 people) is sad. Blase García is making a mockery of Latino issues in this country by using a stereotypical image of a Mexican drink to “represent” the Latino voices in the US. We respectfully disagree and are committed to show the hypocrisy of this so called “movement.”

Already a few members have joined the page and have said exactly what we are hearing from political insiders: Blase García is just a front of the Republican Party. Here is one post:

This is a FARCE of a group! A front! This group was started by a Republican for the purpose of getting the Hispanics to vote Republican. Typical of these Republicans. In this case, we have a woman that will say or do what she sees fit to fight against women’s rights and gay rights. She is an evangelical right wing nut job.

So, stay tuned as we begin to explore what the real political motive is about a “movement” that insults Latinos everywhere.

So, there is a debt compromise and most of the country is pissed. Hey, democracy isn’t pretty and we do commend the US Congress for actually completing a deal, since we do think about 80% of the United States is pretty middle of the road and logical.

Which brings us to the illogical. FOX NEWS.

Looks like this week’s FOX MESSAGE OF THE WEEK is that the United States cannot be Greece, which is having some economic problems of its own as well as social chaos.

First the video evidence:

This message has been going on at Fox for the last three weeks. And now we will tell FOX a couple of things. First of all, the UNITED STATES WILL NEVER BE GREECE. Leave your fear-mongering and irresponsible reporting alone. Start being freakin responsible.

Case in point:

  1. The Wall Street Journal, which last time we checked is owned by FOX NEWS CORP, basically said that comparing the US to Greece is ridiculous.
  2. The percentage of debt as part of each country’s GDP doesn’t even compare. Greece has a larger percentage of debt than the US.
  3. Greece is a REALLY SMALL COUNTRY with just about 11 million people. The US has over 350 million. Not even close. In the grand scheme of things, Greece is a bit bigger than New York City.
  4. Umm, the Greek GDP is in negative numbers. The US is not.
So FOX NEWS, come on, freaking report the news, and just quit being so damn irresponsible. As if you care.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

First of all, whoever thought of the post is brilliant. Yes, just hours after Arizona Senator John McCain hinted that some of the latest Arizona wildfires were caused by illegal immigrants, a fake Internet blog post had McCain demanding that Dallas Mavericks NBA star José Juan Barea prove that he was indeed a US citizen.

Only problem, the story is fake, appearing in some unverifiable sites that just seemed to pick up the story as is, which is even more brilliant. And here it is:

After fanning a virtual wildfire on Saturday with his comments on actual wildfires – “there is substantial evidence that some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally,” Arizona Senator John McCain again made headlines today with some “heated” statements regarding the NBA’s Miami basketball franchise. Providing no evidence or reason whatsoever to back up his claims, McCain stated that illegal immigrants are “distracting us all” from doing our jobs as Americans.

“The elimination of Lebron James and the Miami heat from the NBA playoffs last week is yet another chilling example of illegals crossing our borders, snatching our health care, and eliminating our beloved sports teams from title contention. When will the madness end? And at what cost?”

McCain continued, “If you want me to believe that J.J. Barea is a citizen of this fine country, have him send some proof to my office. You don’t learn to speak Spanish that effectively in our school systems. That I guarantee.”

José Juan “J.J.” Barea, the feisty, Puerto Rican-born backup point guard for the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks, played an integral role in penetrating the outmatched Heat’s interior defense. When asked to comment about McCain’s rant, Barea quipped, “You know, I would have thought he was a Mavericks fan.”

Yup, this is a HOAX.

But guess what? SOMEONE STARTED A PETITION ABOUT IT!

THE DUMBEST TV PERSONALITY EVER: La Comay

But we gotta give the person who did this KUDOS, because the freakin annoying puppet from Puerto Rico, the #1 rated La Comay (a puppet!) reported the news on their show. Ha! Yes, not only do you bring up the fact that Puerto Ricans are indeed US Citizens (see 1917, yeah a crazy year), you also got La Comay to report it as if it were news.

BRAVO, we are not worthy.

Politics aside, ANYONE who wants to know about Puerto Rico’s colonial status and its relationship with the United States, needs to see the following video, produced by students at Antilles High School, a school operated by the US Department of Defense in Guaynabo, PR. This is the BEST summary we have ever seen about Puerto Rico’s political status. Now if only fellow American citizens could pay attention to this 113-year-old issue instead of worrying about the Middle East.

You know it was bound to happen. Someone at the DNC had to have finally admit that the phenomenon that is Sarah Palin can be bottled up and replicated.

Yup, the Dems are thinking like Palin. With the Senate battle against Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown (a state rep from Wrentham, which for those who don’t know Massachusetts, is the home of the largest discount shopping outlet in New England), the Bay State Democrats have found a Palin-esque diamond in the rough. A young and exciting mayor who has very little national political experience, fought in Iraq, and oh yeah, is African American. And yes, he is WICKED SMART, unlike Palin.

Newton Mayor and Senate Candidate Setti Warren

Newton Mayor Setti Warren has been in office for just 18 months, but last week he jumped into the Democratic primary race. His first mission was to effectively label Scott Brown as a typical Republican, and not the maverick LL Bean Barn Jacket independent that he became when he defeated Martha Coakley in 2010 to win the late Ted Kennedy’s seat.

Well, it appears that the strategy is working, since Brown, who has a $6 million (and growing) campaign war chest, is already responding to Warren’s charges. Yup, looks like things will get interesting in Massachusetts next year. Even though Warren still has to win the Democratic primary, he has quickly become a viable candidate, especially among the supporters of Governor Duval Patrick, who won his second term last year amid predictions that Brown and the Republican machine (more like a scooter in this highly Democratic state) would topple the governor.

Today, Warren’s campaign issued an email about the early buzz:

Mayor Setti Warren burst onto the campaign trail for U.S. Senate last week and repeatedly challenged Senator Scott Brown for his irresponsible votes. After declaring his candidacy on Monday via YouTube, Setti hosted a service breakfast at the American Legion Post in Newton to share his vision with supporters for middle-class security and small business job creation.

Mayor Warren began his Bay State kickoff tour by visiting a Head Start in Brockton, where he highlighted the need for investments in education and challenged Scott Brown’s voting record on Pell Grants and Head Start. Then Setti visited M.F. Foley Inc. in New Bedford, where he discussed the importance of protecting jobs in the fishing industry.  “As a United States Senator, one of the things that I want to focus on is making sure that this industry is sustained over the long haul,” he said.

Setti started Wednesday by touring the Gateway Park biotech complex in Worcester where he discussed his plan to eliminate capital gains taxes on investments in small businesses to help jumpstart growth. Setti was asked about the recent controversy surrounding Scott Brown’s statements on photos of Osama Bin Laden, responding that “a U.S. senator has the responsibility to do due diligence when talking about sensitive national security issues.”

Setti toured National Fiber Insulation Company in Belchertown. At the factory he met with workers and discussed job creation, manufacturing, and clean energy. He called attention to the fact that Scott Brown questions the science behind global climate change, a position clearly not in line with Massachusetts values.  He also visited an innovative home heating oil company in Greenfield. There, Setti continued to highlight the importance of investments in renewable energy.

Setti finished off his tour Thursday in Western Massachusetts where he visited Soldier On, unique multi-million dollar residential housing facility in Pittsfield that helps veterans with mental health and substance abuse challenges. Warren discussed his plan to address job training and homelessness among veterans, and praised the work of Soldier On. “As an Iraq vet, I understand how important it is for veterans to come home to a home and integrate back into life,” he said.

And just today, Setti Warren appeared on ABC’s Top Line. When confronted with the NRSC’s repeated attacks, Setti clearly explained his opposition to Senator Brown’s approach of holding middle class tax cuts hostage, in order to secure tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

Setti is energized for his campaign to bring strong leadership to the Senate, support Massachusetts families, and represent our State’s values. He will continue to hold Scott Brown’s accountable for his irresponsible record in the Senate.

One of the biggest complaints from anyone who follows the topsy-turvy political world of Puerto Rico—the oldest colony in the Western Hemisphere—is that very little news about the island regularly appears in the mainstream media.

That is beginning to change.

With student strikes at the University of Puerto Rico that led to a Department of Justice investigation into serious allegations of police abuse, a White House report that calls for a two-step plebiscite to finally resolve the island’s colonial relationship with the United States, and a natural gas pipeline construction proposal by Republican and pro-statehood governor Luis Fortuño, Puerto Rico is in the news more and more.

Today, The Washington Post ran a rather lengthy Associated Press article about Fortuño’s controversial natural gas pet project—known locally as the GASODUCTO—and how the pipeline has found strong opposition on the island, both for its environmental issues as well as charges of political favoritism and corruption.

As the article states:

Puerto Rico’s governor is proposing to solve soaring energy prices on this oil-dependent U.S. island with a massive natural gas pipeline that would cross some of the territory’s most fragile ecosystems and archaeological sites.

Gov. Luis Fortuño has made the $450 million project a central goal of his administration and he insists it is a safe, environment-friendly way to lower utility bills. Critics say the 92-mile (148-kilometer) pipeline will tear up lush green mountains and expose people living near it to deadly explosions.

The pipeline proposal, which Fortuño has dubbed “The Green Way,” also has sparked corruption allegations. The largest contract so far has gone to an engineering firm with no pipeline construction experience that is owned by a childhood friend of the governor. Fortuño has denied any conflicts of interest.

The irony of this current project is that when Fortuño’s predecessor and pro-Commonwealth governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá proposed a shorter pipeline, the Fortuño administration helped stopped the project in mid-2009.

The article further explains that Fortuño is playing typical politics, including the award of a bid without any public RFP process:

This time around, Fortuño is promoting an even larger pipeline proposal, despite similar resistance from activists. Even before he announced the project last August, his administration had awarded about $27 million in contracts — without public bids — for preliminary studies, according to documents filed with Puerto Rico’s Comptroller’s Office.

The documents show the largest contract, worth $9.6 million, went to Ray Engineers PSC, owned by a childhood friend of the governor, Pedro Ray Chacón. Fortuño took a ski trip with Chacón before he became governor, said Ray spokesman Jose Cruz.

While Fortuño has said contracts for preliminary research didn’t require an open bid, senators from the island’s main opposition party are demanding an investigation into how the contracts were awarded.

“This entire process raises serious concerns that lacerate the confidence that people have in their institutions,” Puerto Rico Sen. Cirilo Tirado said in a statement.

Support for the GASODUCTO has also occurred. As the articles states:

At least a dozen municipalities have approved resolutions supporting the project in concept, and it has also been touted by the National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce and the local Association of Engineers and Surveyors.

“The failure to diversify energy sources has been the kiss of death for Puerto Rico,” said the engineers’ association president, Miguel Torres.

Despite all the political debates, the pipeline only needs final approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has been awaiting studies from the island’s energy authority and analysis from other federal agencies before making a ruling.

According to government officials, island residents—who currently pay 21 cents per kilowatt hour as opposed to US mainland residents who pay just 10 cents per kilowatt hours—will save 30% in their electric bills if the GASODUCTO were to be completed.

The details of the GASODUCTO plan are as follow:

  • The pipeline would start in the southern part of the island, where, according to the AP, “where billions of cubic feet of liquefied natural gas would be imported and regasified.”
  • The pipeline would cut through the island and head eastward towards the capital of San Juan.
  • The pipeline would also run through hundreds of rivers and wetlands, as well as some of the island’s archaeological sites. As the AP article describes:

It would traverse 235 rivers and wetlands, cut through more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) of the island’s northern Karst region and possibly affect up to 32 endangered species, including the Puerto Rican parrot, crested toad and boa, according to the Corps of Engineers.

The pipeline also would cross 51 communities, placing as many as 23,000 families in danger of possible explosions, according to the nonprofit environmental organization Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas, which is leading the charge against the pipeline.

Archaeologists say the pipeline would run through historic sugar mill ruins and across petroglyphs carved centuries ago by Taíno Indians.

Opponents of the GASODUCTO held a May 1 demonstration that brought out 30,000 demonstrators. In addition Casa Pueblo has also launched an online petition, which has generated over 8,000 signatures so far. The petitions can be viewed online on this link.

The final twist is all this is the ongoing political battle between Repulican Fortuño, seen as one of the new Latino darlings of the FOX NEWS circuit, and Illinois Democrat Luis Gutiérrez, a Puerto Rican who has been a public critic of the Fortuño administration, having lambasted Fortuño on the floor of Congress a few times this year.

As the article states:

[Gutiérrez] has called the governor’s publicity push for the pipeline, which includes “Green Way” billboards erected around the island, an “Orwellian ad campaign.”

Gutierrez noted that as a gubernatorial candidate, Fortuño had said it would be a “grave mistake” to depend on natural gas.

“Now, he enthusiastically supports not just gas pipelines, but a much bigger, more environmentally disruptive and more expensive pipeline,” Gutierrez said.

Fortuño responded by reminding the congressman that natural gas kept him warm during the bitter East Coast winter.

“I hope he’s not pretending,” Fortuño said, “that he and the people who are in Congress have more rights than those of us who live in Puerto Rico.”
